Resum:
The Madrid-Barcelona route constitutes one of the principal corridors of mobility in Spain, given that it links the country's two largest conurbations, with six and four million inhabitants, respectively.
At present, the number of people who travel between the two cities exceeds five million. Flights represent nearly 70% of the journeys, whereas the railway has a market share of barely 10%. The remaining traffic corresponds to the road.
This situation derives from the characteristics of the supply of each mode of transport. Air transport offers more than 60 flights a day in each direction between Madrid and Barcelona, with a journey time of 50 minutes. The railway offers five services/day/direction and a journey time of six hours.
The new high-speed line between Madrid and Barcelona is expected to enter into commercial service by the year 2005. The journey time of the fastest train will be reduced to 2 hours 15 minutes / 2 hours 30 minutes.
In this context, the object of this paper is: firstly, to outline the passenger traffic forecasts for the new railway line; and secondly, to make an initial evaluation of the socio-economic impact this line will have.
In relation to the first aspect, justification will be given for the anticipated evolution of the respective market shares of the railway and the aeroplane, whereby the current ratio of 12%/88% will change to 60%/40% as a result of the new line's presence in the future scenario.
As regards the second aspect, the paper will present the results obtained in terms of reduced energy consumption, pollutants sent into the atmosphere, as well as the slots which will become available at Barajas Airport in Madrid.
