In the last few decades, intermodality has come to represent the cornerstone of the European transport system in facing up to the continual increases in mobility experimented in the European Union.
With respect to this reality, it should be pointed out that the construction of new railway infrastructure, suitable for introducing high-speed services, has experienced significant development. They currently make up a network of more than 3,000 km, planned to exceed 10,000 km at the end if this decade.
This new railway network will make it possible to configure an intermodal offer by making the transport system more flexible and by reducing road and air traffic congestion. To do this, it is necessary to achieve common points between access areas to the different modes of transport, converting railway station and airport terminals into single concepts from a practical point of view.
From this perspective the paper has a dual aim: on the one hand to present a detailed view of current or planned air-rail intermodality at those airports in the European Union; and on the other hand, to graphically demonstrate that the aforementioned intermodality can be implemented by using different functional configurations, but maintaining at all times the concept of real integration of the different modes.
